01 Jun CHEERS TO 39 YEARS
We are raising a glass today as we celebrate AOS’s 39th anniversary! While we acknowledge how far we have come as a company, it is inevitable that we reminisce about the beginning of such a journey. Keeping in that spirit, let’s go back to June 1st, 1976 and see what the world looked like.
It was Tuesday, under the sign of Gemini. The president of the United States was Republican Gerald Ford. People in the United States were listening to Love Hangover by Diana Ross. In the United Kingdom, Fernando by Abba was on the top five hits list. One of the most viewed movies released in 1976 was The Man Who Fell to Earth directed by Nicolas Roeg.
The United States and nine other nations assisted Great Britain through a financial crisis with $5 billion. It was caused by the step drop in the value of the pound. The Beatles released Rock and Roll Music, which includes twenty-eight upbeat songs with Got To Bet You Into My Life being released as a single. The Boston Celtics beat the Phoenix Suns in triple overtime with a final score of 128-126. Jo Jo White scored 15 of his game-high 33 points in the extra periods. Top movies at the box office this week: Bad News Bears, Won Ton Ton, All the President’s Men, Groove Tube, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Exorcist.
In the design world, Knoll was celebrating its 38th birthday in 1976. This was the year the Eclat textile by designer Anni Albers was in. Albers’ design philosophy was to ground the pattern with order but not in an obvious manner. In the same year, Knoll commissioned German designer Otto Zapf to transform certain aspects of the Stephens System into a lighter, less-expensive office system. The resulting Zapf System uses many of the Stephens component solutions but replaces the heavy wood panels with lighter fabrics and plastic alternatives.
Things certainly look different these days, but our primary objective to deliver the highest quality contract furnishings and services to our customers has stood the test of time. Cheers to another 39 years!
