LUMCON Blue Works

Blue Works, is a new 25,500 square foot satellite campus for the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) in Houma, created to be a hub for innovation, collaboration, and public engagement focused on Louisiana’s coastal and marine environments. Designed by EskewDumezRipple, this state-of-the-art facility brings together students, researchers, and community members to explore and address critical environmental challenges facing the Gulf of Mexico and the state’s coastal wetlands. The facility’s expressive design fosters interaction and collaboration and showcases ongoing research and educational activities, encouraging visitors to engage with the science in real-time.

The scope of the project includes a variety of dynamic educational spaces, including a welcoming reception area, interactive exhibit space, a lecture hall, makers labs, research labs, a library, conference rooms, private and shared offices, a break room, and informal collaboration areas. These spaces are strategically arranged to separate public “Learn/Explore” areas from focused “Work/Research” zones, allowing flexibility for both engagement and concentration. The interior design draws inspiration from Louisiana’s maritime heritage, utilizing warm wood finishes, custom nautical elements, and a vibrant cerulean color palette to reflect the facility’s marine focus.

As a result, Blue Works serves not only as a research facility but as a vital community resource. Public access to the building’s various spaces encourages community involvement, making it a welcoming space for both formal programs and informal innovation projects. The facility promotes interdisciplinary collaboration between professional researchers and the broader public, helping to strengthen the local economy by inspiring future generations of STEM professionals.
