During Hurricane Katrina, the Rosa F. Keller Library, which was built in 1993, and its Community Center next door, a bungalow originally built as a residence in 1917, both flooded. The Broadmoor community gathered together to rebuild its neighborhood and put the library and community center at the hearts of its efforts for recovery and restoration. Completed in 2012, the LEED-certified project is a vital community hub and has maintained its connection to nature and water through the facility’s rain garden, courtyard and sustainability efforts.
The 10,000-square foot Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center serves the Broadmoor community by providing residents with an innovative library, gathering space and valuable educational resource that encourages engagement and learning. The new library addition primarily houses book shelving, computer stations, and other core elements of the library function while the historic house operates primarily as the community meeting center and home to a small café. Using sustainable and durable furnishings, AOS worked with EskewDumezRipple to create designated spaces for reading, reference, technology, stacks, a children’s room and a courtyard. Even as a public space and high-traffic area, the space allows for independent and group work and informal settings where visitors are invited to curl up and relax when reading. Today the neighborhood library and community center remains a home for education and is central to sustaining the Broadmoor community.
