Beginning in 2020, Tulane University started transforming their on-campus housing to enhance the student experience through the creation of innovative living and learning spaces. The Village, the largest capital investment in Tulane’s history, will dramatically increase the capacity and impact of its residential housing through a blend of modern accommodations, academic resources, and vibrant social settings. As the first of five installments, the River and Lake Residence Halls opened in August 2023 and mark a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to fostering undergraduate education and engagement.
Designed by EskewDumezRipple, the new building is comprised of 230,000 square feet across seven stories and is organized by two adjacent wings, which serve as separate functioning residence halls. On the ground floor, the complex features the Small Family Collaboration Hub, a 14,000 square foot public space filled with study rooms, a gaming area, a large-screen television for viewing parties, and multiple collaboration spaces for additional campus programming.
Available to returning students, generally sophomores and juniors, the River and Lake Residence Halls can house nearly 700 undergraduates on the upper floors. Each wing is designed around several large, double-height lounges, complete with TV lounge areas and kitchens to give residents a home away from home. In addition, the two residence halls are extend beyond their interiors to provide outdoor spaces that seamlessly blend with the natural landscape of Tulane’s campus. These outdoor areas serve as extensions of the living experience, offering students a tranquil environment for relaxing, studying, or socializing amidst nature. A raised courtyard on the second floor also provides more recreational space and connects the two residence halls.
By integrating innovative design, academic resources, and lively social spaces, the River and Lake Residence Halls serve as a catalyst for academic and personal growth. Designed to bring students back on campus, the project fosters a sense of community among the students and connection with the Tulane campus as a whole for enhanced academic success, increased engagement, convenient access and holistic development.
